But we know one thing – a mere rumor about Lethal Weapon is better than an established fact about something shit like an upcoming comic book CGI project, right? So having appreciated this probably means nothing, let’s look at the positives….
First, we know that ‘old timer action’ is doing reasonable business at the minute. And we’re not just talking about The Expendables franchise. ‘Red 2’ is another example of such a movie that has the confidence of the studio. John Malkovitch is almost 60, older than Mel Gibson. Anthony Hopkins is 75, 10 years older than Danny Glover. And we can guarantee Mel and Danny are just plain funnier. Secondly, what might it be about? The last talked about premise was actually revealed by Richard Donner a year ago: “The two crazies decide to cool their lives, but it’s impossible for them to stay out of situations. It starts with Riggs and Murtaugh out in the country in a motorhome. They’re on a trip and they stop to get gas, but Roger forgets to put the brake on. So the motorhome rolls through a village, annihilating everything, and they get in serious trouble. It had a lot of heart, a lot of family. Rene (Russo, who played Lorna Cole), Darlene (Love, who played Trish Murtaugh), they would all have come back.” Would it be a pipedream for Donner to direct one more time? Too old? Clint Eastwood is the same age, still directing. If you think that’s old, consider that Manoel De Oliveira is still directing movies at the spritely age of 104.
‘The Gang’s All Here’, 2015? We can dream.
