22 Jump Street: 2nd Highest R-Rated Comedy Opening Ever

Who said that R-rated movies are going out of fashion?  R-rated comedy actioner 22 Jump Street says otherwise.  It has scored a domestic opening weekend in the USA of $60 million plus.  It’s worth checking out, we gave it a positive review last week.

This is second only to The Hangover II (horrible film, that’s what they get for letting one actor force Mel Gibson out of it), which scored a domestic opening weekend on $85.9 million back in 2011.  So this is a very strong opener for 22 Jump Street and that’s not even considering the international take, which is also tracking strongly.

This is good news and could possibly have longer ramifications.  This is a movie that is somewhat similar to Beverly Hills Cop IV in DNA.  That movie, which I am already confident will be R-rated, can only benefit from such news.  They’ll take a look at what this movie has done – which is earn it’s entire budget back and then some, in one weekend in one territory, then rub their chins over any niggling doubts about Foley’s next adventure.
