Updated: The Expendables 3 Has Bombed

Updated: For the second weekend, things don’t look much better for The Expendables 3. In fact they look around 64% worse as Deadline reports a drop in sales around that number.  This does not bode well for another Expendables movie.  It’ll take a small miracle for it to break $40 million domestically, and $200 internationally.  Those may not look like particalarly bad numbers, but a key player in the release of another Expendables movie is LionsGate.  Think of Millenium as the people who build it, then LionsGate as the people who lift it off the ground.  They have taken probably the biggest hit and may say no thanks to Stallone’s (already hyped by him) EX4…

Previously: Weekend numbers are in for The Expendables 3.  And they do not look good.  $16.2 million according to BoxOfficeMojo.  The first movie garnered $34 million, the second $28 million with the notable setback of shortly following a cinema massacre.  These days more than ever, the first weekend is the most important for a movie.  And considering these numbers, The Expendables 3 is a confirmed bomb.

This is a result of greed and complacency.  The PG-13 rating was designed to reel in more and younger audience members, it backfired.  Poor word of mouth didn’t help either.  As for the leak, that will be something they’ll be able to blame.  Although the same problem didn’t hurt Lone Survivor, which was a good movie coincidentally.

So what now for The Expendables?  This movie will be lucky to break $40 million and if that’s the case, we’ll probably not see an Expendables 4.  There is no cool off period available either, the mainstays and main attractions of this franchise are old men now.  They can’t shelve it for a few years then wheel Harrison Ford onto the set.  My guess is that small time spin offs will come with the likes of Randy Couture and Dolph Lundgren.  But we shall see…
