5) Lionheart (1990)
I was going to put Bloodsport as Van Damme’s 5th best movie, but I realised Lionheart has an edge over it. Its story is that bit better and the fight scenes more varied. It’s Van Damme as a member of the Legion, probably the hardest outfit in all of Europe’s military, coming back to (although this was one of the first) an old JCVD favourite: avenging a brother. I miss movies with fight scenes like this. I.e. where you can see what the fuck is happening. Well choreographed, edited and directed. Are they as realistic as today’s preferred MMA-style dogs-dinner scenes where you can’t see shit? No, but they’re just plain better. A good ‘boss’ fight seals it.
