Five Underrated Manly Movies: Part II

A Midnight Clear (1992)

The Battle of the Bulge, 1944.  The SS are in town, freed up from a Soviet break in hostilities, to show the western armies what’s up.  Kevin Dillion, Ethan Hawke, John C. McGinley and Gary Sinise are greenhorn recruits thrown into a forward position to keep an eye out on rapid and unpredictable German formations.  They have to set up an outpost in an abandoned mansion.  Nearby however, a bunch of exhausted regular German troops are also located.  Neither side has much interest in dying when the war is basically already over.  They agree to forment their own ceasefire.

This is a beautiful movie, the scenery, snow and atmosphere is extremely still, despite huge overtures of hell lurking just miles or even yards away, at any time.  At has a good cast too, those mentioned above.  For years it was basically buried as a movie, with just a few occasional slaps on the back.  Then finally they released it on Blu-Ray after a cult following demanded it.
