Terminator: Genisys Passes Fury Road’s Box Office

terminator53dAnyone who has been keeping an eye on the box office performances of Terminator: Genisys and Mad Max: Fury Road respectively might have noticed that Terminator: Genisys has surpassed the latter in international box office takings.

Genisys is sitting at around $412 million internationally while Fury Road topped out at around $375 million internationally.

So how did Genisys, a filmed that was mauled crtically, outdo Fury Road, a movie practically adored by everyone?  The obvious answer there, in case you haven’t guessed, is that Mad Max did not get a theatrical run in China, whereas Genisys did, and drew an added $90+ million to its international take.

That said, despite pulling less money, by the end of May not only was a sequel to Fury Road already being spoken of, but George Miller had also given it a name (Mad Max: The Wasteland).  We’re well into September now and there is still no word of a sequel to Genisys.

It is perhaps accurate that the fate of a sequel to that movie was decided at the North American box office (and critically, too), which is where the big bucks come in, investment wise.  With Emilia Clarke axed from the franchise and Arnold Schwarzenegger pushing 70 and unknown to the PG-13 demographic he was aimed at (ironic, that), it’s unlikely that people will rush out to put big bucks down on Jai Courtney and Jason Clarke.
