David Ayer Talks Superhero Saturation

suicidesquadfullmovieI think a lot of people are beginning to feel superhero and/or comic book hero fatigue.  To be blunt about it, it’s fast becoming ‘same old shit’.  Per a review of The Avengers on this site, they often go something like this:

‘Story matters, so the critics tell us, and the critics raved over The Avengers.  What is the story?  Why, it’s about a threat to Earth in the form of a horned alien coming in through a hole in the sky.  This threat will be dealt with by a top-secret group:  The Avengers.  The group is kept secret, of course, by hiring discontented yet nonetheless internationally recognisable characters, who make the FBI most wanted list look anonymous.  Such as a man in an flying suit who loves TV-Time.  This inconspicuous group hold their clandestine meetings on a flying aircraft carrier the size of New Zealand.’

Anyway, fatigue may temporarily be interrupted since David Ayer – a great director of manly movies – is entering the fray with Suicide Squad.  And it sounds like he won’t be interested in the status quo route: “You know, all these movies are about defeating the evil alien robot from fucking planet X, before it destroys the world with its ticking clock. And who the fuck cares? But you do a story abut struggle and isolation and people who have been s**t on, that suddenly get thrown this lifeline…that’s not so bad. I like to think of this as Comic Book Movie 2.0.”
