Mel Gibson was seen for the first time directing his World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge in Sydney with actors Vince Vaughn, Andrew Garfield and Hugo Weaving. The Hollywood star struck a serious demeanor as he guided the actors through tense scenes shot in an eerie graveyard in Sydney’s Centennial Park on Tuesday. Listening intently to headphones, the 59-year-old appeared, at times, lost in thought as he meandered through the overgrown cemetery while cameramen rallied around.
In the movie, WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first Conscientious Objector in American history to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
