Updated: Smith Responds To Being Killed Off

willsmithindependencedayresurgenceUpdated: In a new interview with Yahoo whilst out promoting “Concussion,” Smith was asked about the news of his character’s death and passing on the project:

“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.”

Previously: With the debut trailer emerging at the weekend for Independence Day: Resurgence, we’re going to get the question – where is Will Smith in Independence Day 2?  The off screen answer is that Smith said he is not interested in doing sequels, which came before his scheduling with Suicide Squad.  And it looks like Fox was not happy with that.

The promo website Warof1996.com related to the film has revealed the fate of his character Lt. Steven Hiller in Roland Emmerich’s follow-up;

“While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

So it looks like the door has been officially shut for Smith to make a return, or even a cameo.  I guess they’re somewhat pissed that Smith headed over to Warner for the DC franchise.  I wonder if there is more to it though…
