What’s Going On In This Alien: Covenant Picture?

Here is a new picture from Alien: Covenant.  But what is happening in it and who are the armed men?

Some are speculating that they are a precursor to the Colonial Marines.  Hard to say, they look like some type of special forces to me.

They certainly aren’t using the pulse rifle, some could say it wasn’t invented in lore yet but, actually, a prop was created for Prometheus, a black prototype of the rifle was said to be on board the vessel but for whatever reason, not used in the movie.  I’m guessing Scott didn’t like the idea of it making the movie look like an ‘Alien’ movie.
