News Blow Out 02/16

Here is a bunch of news that’ll be condensed into one article today, starting with news of a sequel to Suicide Squad. Mel Gibson could end up directing it. Warner Bros. is courting the actor-director to helm Suicide Squad 2 and the sides are early in talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. No official offer has been made nor has any commitment.

That’s interesting, but for my money, unlikely.  Mel recently denounced ‘spandex’ movies, or more accurately, their sucky writing.  So Warners would really have to let him do his thing in order for him to get involved in such a tired genre.

Joe Carnahan is taking on The Raid.

The filmmaker and actor Frank Grillo on Wednesday shared an Instagram video announcing the project, which would reimagine the groundbreaking 2011 Indonesian martial-arts film.  So while it was dead at one point, now it’s back on the radar.

In a series of tweets Wednesday, Carnahan revealed more details of the re-imagining, saying he would direct and produce the project, with Gareth Evans, helmer of the original film and its 2014 sequel, on board as an exec producer.

Yes… news about another comic book movie!  But like the above, somewhat relevant because this news features Arnold Schwarzenegger and all news about The Oak gets coverage, because he’s Arnold.  According to AVClub Arnold might be considering a cameo in the movie.

Speculation is that Schwarzenegger will play Ares, the god of war, or that he’ll show up in a post-credits scene. Though these rumours right now look especially weak to me.

How many of those Marine movies are there?  Apparently the fifth is coming out way, check out the trailer above and the log line below.  Please… no CGI bullets substituting blanks this time!

Jake Carter is now working as an EMT back stateside after fulfilling his duties in the Middle East. While responding to a call, Carter finds himself protecting a man from a biker gang ruthlessly trying to attack him.

Thanks To: Everyone who sent these in

Just rewatched Joe Carnahan’s The Grey the other day, underrated movie. He could make the remake of the Raid a competent movie. Let’s hope so

And Mel helming a superhero movie? I’d rather he directed an r-rated Batman solo pic.

    • Mucho Macho

The Grey is unfortunately criminally underrated. A lot of people were expecting something else or just didn’t get it. The score is really good too.

I also agree with you about him directing Batman. That would be great.

    • Barney Ross

      The Grey is a masterpiece

  • Just Some Polack

Mel, if you really think about it, don’t take it! Even if you know how to turn it into manly masterpiece, the WB will surely fuck it up by adding rainbow and unicorns.

The Mel thing is interesting. Hollywood has now really forgiven him if a major studio is offering him a job at their cash cow project. But we all know that these comic book shits are done by committee and that King Gibson has shat on comic book movies repeatedly and publicly so it’s kind of a bad look for both parties if they did one together. Not to mention what a huge waste of Gibsons time and talent it would be to do that crap. Then again if he does do it, he would most likely get paid VERY handsomely and if (and I use “if” only not because I doubt Mel but because he wouldn’t get the freedom to do what he wants) the movie turns out well and performs well it would give Mel more power to do what he wants going forward. So there is a path where it does make sense I guess but I hope it doesn’t happen, it’s a very tainted franchise to begin with so even without all the other baggage it’s a tough project to take on.

would rather see Mel helm The Batman.. or King Conan

  • Barney Ross

Joe Carnahan…watch that guy, i think he’s gonna make great R rated stuff soon, he already did a few times…

    • Serbius

      Bad Boys III

  • Jake

Mel has confirmed he’s in talks for Suicide Squad and the job is reportedly his if he wants it. Apparently he wants to work with Will Smith.

I’d be shocked if DC expected Arnold to do anything more than voice a cgi character or possibly play an old Zeus similar to Anthony Hopkins’ Odin. Anyone expecting Arnold to be flying around chopping up guys with a sword is likely setting themselves up for disappointment.

  • Barney Ross

It needs to be HARD R this time, not pg13 soft ass shit
Mel wont do a PG13 so you can forget it.

Dragged Across Concrete is the Mel flic I want to see…he should stay away from Marvel and Will Ferrell….Carnahan only looks good next to the betas who rule hollywood today..but the guy is limited…no class…The Grey is very watchable but shit compared to Deliverance…he will disappoint us with The Raid…Why can’t Evans do it again?

    • OT: going to give ‘Death Hunt’ a watch this weekend, JIm. I’ll report as soon as its done. Also, I’ll give ‘The Raid’ remake a chance since Evans is involved. I like Frank Grillo & Carnahan’s ‘The Grey’ was good. At least we’ll always have the original. It will never go away.

    • Just watched it. Good movie! Thank you Jim. Love Branson’s demeanor. Since they were in the wilderness I wish they would’ve included some sort of bear attack or encounter with wolves but the movie was still really good.

its good that Mel is again developing a relationship with WB . I still have hopes for a Lethal Weapon reboot/sequel in which Riggs takes the role of Roger with a new crazy cop under his wing . Its a long shot but it would be awesome if it happened

  • Georg Walker

I like that they keep The Marine franchise going. There are not too many franchises of B action movies like this these days, compared to the 80s/90s.

  • Jake

Update to the Arnold rumor: Woman Woman screened last night and Ares is being played by David Thewlis.

Hey – since IMDB is history could you make an open forum post maybe like once a week? It would give an opportunity for random talk or troll battles, whatever
