Underrated Manly Movies: Part VII

2) The Silent Partner (1978)

Anyone remember Elliot Gould?  Not precisely a manly actor, but heist movies are a good genre and this is another one of them.

The Silent Partner is a remake of the Danish film Think of a Number (Tænk på et tal) from 1969 written and directed by Palle Kjærulff-Schmidt. Both are based on the novel Tænk på et tal by Danish writer Anders Bodelsen.

Gould is a bank teller who learns that his place is about to be robbed ahead of time.  Armed with this knowledge, Gould plans to double scam the thief.  To reveal anymore would kind of spoil the plot, but obviously Gould’s plan has unintended consequences and that’s where the fun begins.

This is old school story telling, back when earnest thrillers competed with each other in the 1970s. It has an intelligent plot and Gould’s nervy disposition helps sell the idea that the man has landed himself in hot water.  But everyone wants that fucking money!
