Underrated Manly Movies: Part VII

1) Bat*21 (1988)

It really doesn’t matter what the movie is, if Gene Hackman is in it then it’s probably going to be good. Unfortunately, Danny Glover has sullied his own career in recent times so the same can’t be said for him.

Anyway, Bat*21 is a 1988 American war film directed by Peter Markle, and adapted from the book by William C.. Anderson, novelist and retired United States Air Force colonel.  Hackman gets lost behind enemy lines in Vietnam, it’s up to spotter pilot Danny Glover to save him and be a friend in need in Hackman’s darkest hour.

The movie  was a box office bomb, so it’s kind of deserving for this list.  It deserved better.  Hackman is of course, excellent.  Arguably, Glover is even better — probably the best black actor there ever was.  There are good scenes of tension too, plenty of nervy bush hiding.  To quote Emil Antonowsky… I like it!

Pity that this movie has never been released on Blu-Ray (the DVD ain’t all that great even by DVD standards)… why don’t studio bean counters rectify this?!
