Beverly Hills Cop III: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

THE BAD

THAT FUCKING MUSIC

One of the first things that come to mind when I think of Beverly Hills Cop III is the soundtrack.  And not for the right reasons.  Gone is Harold Faltermeyer and throughout is an annoying riff on the Axel. F theme.

It sounds like cheap 1990s trash.  Worse, that terrible Wonder World theme circulates in the background throughout the whole movie.  Overall, the music of the third movie is bad.  It has somehow aged worse than even the first movie.

WONDER WORLD

The whole ‘Wonder World’ thing, man… it was pretty shitty.  We know the movie was ‘R’ rated but it still lightened the tone beyond what it should’ve been.  There’s also something tacky about the whole theme, like a bush-league Disney or something.  Even though trucks of money was thrown at the movie, something feels off.

Mind you, some scenes are funny.  For instance, the typical 1990’s/millenial kid assaulting Foley, ‘ohh, you little motherfucker’…

SIDNEY BERNSTEIN M.I.A.

One of the best things about Beverly Hills Cop II was the introduction of the Sidney Bernstein character. He is missing from the third movie and this is bad.

Played by Gilbert Gottfried, he represents the typical attitude of the first two movies and the fact that he’s missing here and that the third movie is also missing a little ‘edge’ (in Murphy’s own words) is perhaps not a coincidence.

Look, I want to see Bernstein return the fourth movie.  I want to hear him complaining about his bitch wife in a foul mouthed tirade and be up to no good.
