The Fall 2017 Manly Movie Guide

DADDY’S HOME 2 – NOVEMBER 10TH

Of course, if Mel Gibson is in a movie, it cannot possibly be bad.  Daddy’s Home 2 looks like it’ll be worth watching.  This time, Gibson plays Mark Wahlberg’s manly father, who isn’t impressed with Wahlberg’s veering towards beta male territory and seeks to set him straight.

Synopsis: Father and stepfather Dusty and Brad join forces to make Christmastime perfect for the children. Their newfound partnership soon gets put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho dad and Brad’s gentle father arrive to turn the holiday upside down.

DARKEST HOUR – NOVEMBER 22ND

This is the second of two Winston Churchill movies this year.  The first was Churchill, starring Brian Cox.  I do not recommend watching that film, to call it mediocre would be generous.  Perhaps this second effort from director Joe Wright will be better.  Gary Oldman takes a shot at the role this time.

Synopsis: A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.

DEATH WISH – NOVEMBER 22ND

At first it looked like this might be another painful Bruce Willis venture, doubly so because it walks on sacred ground.  But the trailer wasn’t too bad and even better, it has drawn atomic uproar from leftwing extremists.  One way or the other, this could provide some funny entertainment.  See: Outraged political lunatics come after Death Wish.

Synopsis: A mild-mannered father is transformed into a killing machine after his family is torn apart by a violent act.
