Man Claims To Be ‘Escape From Alcatraz’ Fugitive

There is a new spin on the movie Escape From Alcatraz.  Many or even most people believe the escapees (led by Clint Eastwood in the movie) could never have made it through the Bay.

Now though, the FBI has reopened its investigation into the escape of the three inmates who broke out of Alcatraz in 1962 – after receiving a letter from a man claiming to be one of the escapees now in his eighties.

‘My name is John Anglin. I escape[d] from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I’m 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!’ the letter begins.

‘If you announce on TV that I will be promised to first go to jail for no more than a year and get medical attention, I will write back to let you know exactly where I am. This is no joke…’

The FBI is apparently taking the letter seriously (although probably just procedure) and running DNA tests on it.  But even though it’s probably a hoax, the U.S. Marshals service also has the men still listed as ‘wanted’, and you kinda have to root for the escapees too.  In 2011 Mythbusters try to re-run the breakout and raft crossing and determined that it was possible.

So if you have ever watched the movie thinking ‘good movie, but pity they died’, think again…
