UPDATED 2X: A quick one here, it’s Maverick back on the crotch rocket. Looking forward to this film purely because of Cruise’s reputation for quality control in his projects. No fucking CGI overkill.

UPDATED: Well it looks like this movie has been pushed back over a year. June 26, 2020. The pic had an original release date of July 12, 2019.
But in a way it’s good news.
Deadline says that the reason for such a big delay is because of the desire to get the air combat scenes just right. Knowing how involved Tom Cruise is in the movie and how he prefers practical stunts and action scenes, this likely means we’re not going to be cheated with CGI fakery and this could well end up being a helluva film.
PREVIOUSLY: Tom Cruise has shared the first image from Top Gun: Maverick. Hashtag, #Day1, as the film now enters production in earnest. It has always seemed like one of those projects that was only a pipe dream, but is now most definitely happening.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the Tony Scott-directed original, will return to produce the sequel, along with Skydance’s David Ellison and Cruise. The new film sees older pilot aces/Top Guns grapple with the advent of drone warfare.
Top Gun: Maverick is slated to hit theaters on July 12, 2019. Cruise’s next film Mission: Impossible – Fallout is released on July 27.
