It’s 20 years this week since the release of Get Carter, the 2000 remake of the original of the same name. The film was undeservedly torn to shreds by critics, calling it ‘useless’ and ‘obnoxious’. It was also a box office flop and part of a series of movies (Driven, D-Tox) that drove Sylvester Stallone’s career into the gutter, although D-Tox was also unfairly mauled.
But Get Carter is in fact a good manly movie, and has aged well. The hate is undeserved. Should Stallone have been nominated for worst actor, despite his excellent scenes in the movie discussing his niece’s rape? Sounds like votes motivated by spite to me.
Let’s not forget some of the manly dialogue.
Michael Caine: Y’know, Jack, revenge… it doesn’t work
Stallone: *Loads weapon*.
Stallone: Sure it does
Get Carter didn’t even recoup 1/3 of its budget. But it’s time to shut down the highfalutin haters. Good film.
