UPDATED: NO CGI IN GREMLINS 3

UPDATED:  Is this movie still happening?  It appears so.  Here is what the director has told Collider.

“I wrote a script, so there is an existing script. We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having — you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI in Gremlins 3.”

It says a lot about CGI that it’s being rebuffed by seriously film makers even in the ’20s.

PREVIOUSLY: It looks like Gremlins 3 is actually and finally headed our way.  According to one of the internet’s biggest movie sites, ‘talk of Gremlins 3 is finally real and original screenwriter Chris Columbus has written a script’.

The movie is now ‘in development’ at Warners.

Columbus says his script returns to the macabre tone of the original film, whose monster murders were so intense that it, along with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, pressured the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. Gremlins 2 was rated PG-13

Gremlins fans are also worried that a new film would use CGI gremlins in place of the puppets. Columbus assured fans the film would still use puppets, but visual effects could make puppetry easier to achieve than it was in 1984.

So it might not be fully CGI-free, but at least they’re using puppets.  That sort of news makes me want to see a real sequel to this, with real animatronics;
