File this under ‘what the fuck?’, as it appears that Chris Hemsworth is set to appear in the sequel to Gladiator, according to Australian magazine New Idea.
According to the magazine, Hemsworth would play Maximus’ son, while Russell Crowe would return as Maximus. Even though both are, you know, kinda dead as door nails by the time the film had ended. The mag’s source says: “Russell thinks he could be the only man to credibly play his son in a Gladiator sequel.”
They also say that Crowe and Hemsworth have spent ‘many hours’ discussing the script, and Hemsworth would also act as producer. Call me a cynic, but how much of those ‘many hours’, then, were discussing the almighty dollar?
Anyway, talk of a Gladiator sequel has now literally been around for decades. Including some older rumblings of a sequel taking a more drastic turn towards Gods, mythology and the fantastical. Which kind of flips the whole theme of the original on its head.
It’s bold of them to try and sequelize this thing. What about Commodus? One of my favorite scenes from the original film; Commudos owning a girlie man senator…
